France's budget gap in January drops slightly

At the end of January, France, already struggling to record healthy finances, lowered its budget deficit by 2.12 percent compared to the same period a year ago on high receipts, figures released by budget ministry showed on Tuesday.

According to the ministry's monthly data, the budget gap stood at 9.2 billion euros (10.13 billion U.S. dollars) over the period down from 9.4 billion euros registered in January 2015.

The positive fiscal performance stemmed mainly from rising revenue which totalled 26.4 billion euros in January up 6.45 percent from the same month in the previous on growing fiscal net receipts.

However, this growth is still not significant, the ministry added.

Over the period, the spending of the eurozone's second biggest economy increased to 31.6 billion euros against 31.1 billion euros last year.

For the whole year of 2016, French government targets 3.3 percent for its budget gap. (1 euro = 1.101 U.S. dollar) Enditem
