(Recast) 1st LD Writethru: 1 sailor killed, 4 injured in fire aboard Indian aircraft carrier

One sailor was killed and four others injured in a minor fire aboard the Indian aircraft carrier INS Viraat Sunday night at the navy port of Goa, said the Indian Navy early Monday morning.

The fire was caused by steam leakage at the boiler room of the warship, which will be decommissioned soon, according to a navy spokesman.

INS Viraat has served in the Indian navy for three decades after being sold to India by Britain in 1987. It is one of two operating aircraft carriers of the country.

The Indian navy has suffered a series of incidents over the past few years, including the explosion and sinking of a submarine in Mumbai in August 2013, in which 18 sailors were killed. Endit
