1.4 bln USD transformation of Manchester Airport cleared for take-off

Manchester's planning authority Thursday gave the go-ahead for 1.42 billion U.S. dollars transformation program at Manchester Airport paving the way for a 10-year growth plan.

The Transformation Program includes a series of 60 enhancements that will provide millions of passengers with facilities that combine a contemporary look and feel with state of the art services.

Manchester Airport is Britain's third largest airport and was recently voted the country's airport of the year for the second year in succession.

In June the first direct flights from Britain to Beijing, outside of London, will start at Manchester.

Brad Miller, Manchester Airport Transformation Program Director said: "The enhancements the project will make will enable us to further adapt, modernise and transform the customer service experience we are able to offer passengers and airlines. It will also allow Manchester Airport to continue in its role as job creator and economic provider for Greater Manchester and the wider region."

A report to city planning committee members said the program would create work for an additional 2,000 people at the airport.

The program will see Terminal 2, which is being extended by 82,400 square meters, becoming the airport's primary terminal building.

There will also be improvements to Terminal 3 to cater for increased demand and an expanding flight schedule. Terminal 1, which dates back to the 1960s, is considered outdated and will be demolished.

There will also be a U.S. pre-clearance facility, allowing passengers to clear immigration, customs, and agricultural inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before boarding their flights, as well as the introduction of the latest technology in a new, enlarged security hall that will screen more passengers, quicker.
