Faustin Touadera declared Central African Republic president-elect

Central African Republic's Constitutional Court on Tuesday officially declared Faustin Archange Touadera as the president-elect with 62.69 percent of the votes cast in the Feb. 14 presidential runoff vote.

He beat his challenger Georges Anicet Dologuele who got 37.31 percent of the votes.

The final results are almost similar to the provisional results that were published two weeks ago which showed Touadera had won with 62.71 percent against 37.29 percent for his rival.

A mathematics professor and former vice chancellor of Bangui university, Touadera previously served as prime minister (2008-2013) under the regime of President Francois Bozize who was deposed in March 2013 by Seleka, a Muslim rebel group which had then seized power in the majority Christian country .

Touadera is the second democratically elected president of the Central African Republic after Ange-Felix Patasse who was elected in 1993.

The new president is expected to work for the restoration of peace and security, revival of the national economy and promotion of national reconciliation.

Touadera will be sworn in on March 30, marking the end of the transition period that has been led by Catherine Samba-Panza since January 2014 when Seleka ceded power under international pressure. Enditem
