Hillary Clinton won Texas' Democratic presidential primary while Senator Ted Cruz won the Lone Star State on the Republican side on what is known as Super Tuesday.
Supporters of the major contenders for both parties rallied through the state of Texas after casting their votes.
In the primaries, a component of U.S. presidential elections, party representatives of each state vote separately. Super Tuesday is often a deciding point in the primaries, producing a clear favorite to clinch party nomination. Republican contender Donald Trump and Clinton came out as winners of this year's mega contest.
In Houston, Clinton supporters met with state officials at a bar featuring 13 large-screen televisions airing Super Tuesday coverage. When Clinton was announced the winner, more than 100 people applauded, chanting "Hillary" and "USA."
"Hillary was a teacher and I'm a teacher, and it doesn't make any sense at all that the Republicans want to do away with the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency. So, should we just be uneducated and poisoned?" asked Teri Garbetta, 25.
Guillermo Lopez, 28, a wireless network administrator, said Clinton was the strongest candidate the Democrats have to go up against the Republican candidate.
Supporters of Cruz were equally enthusiastic about his campaign.
Robert Cummings, a respiratory therapist, said he voted for Cruz because the senator most closely follows the guidelines laid out in the U.S. Constitution.
Cummings said Cruz would stop the influx of illegal immigrants coming over the U.S.-Mexican border, a policy he believes in. "You can't just come over here, illegally work and be taken care of at others' expense."
As for the Democratic contenders, Cummings said the choice between Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders was a choice between two evils, adding that Clinton's use of classified information in her emails was a crime.
John Nessenthaler, a Houston police officer, agreed that Cruz was an honest person who would uphold the Constitution, unlike Trump.
"Trump flip-flops on everything and gave money to the Clintons in the past," said Nessenthaler.
Supporters at the Houston bar also included U.S. Congressman Al Green, who said "Super Tuesday" brought Americans closer to the day when the title of president would be prefaced by the word "madam."
U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee thanked Clinton's Houston campaign workers and said the real work begins after Clinton's Super Tuesday win.
"You need to start recharging because the big fight is in November," said Texas Senator Sylvia Garcia. Endi
