Military vehicle hits landmine in eastern Ukraine, killing 3

Xinhua, March 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least three government soldiers were killed and two others wounded after a Ukrainian army vehicle hit a landmine in the conflict-torn eastern Lugansk region, authorities said on Tuesday.

The vehicle was travelling on a rural road between the villages of Novotoshkivske and Hirske, located about 15 km away from the frontline of fighting, when it struck the landmine, the press service of Lugansk regional administration said, without giving further details.

"Circumstances of the tragic incident are being investigated," Georgy Tuka, the head of Lugansk regional administration, was quoted as saying by his press service.

It marked the second deadly landmine accident in Ukraine's troubled east in less than a month.

On Feb. 10, four civilians were killed and another one was severely injured when a minibus hit a landmine in Donetsk region.

About 30,000 square kilometers of battlefields in eastern Ukraine are littered with explosive devices following almost two years of fighting between government troops and pro-independence insurgents. Endit
