At least four soldiers were killed and several others injured in a landmine explosion at Hawo Abdi, about 25km south of Mogadishu on Tuesday, authorities said.

District Commissioner of Lafole Abdullah Isse said the officers were killed when a landmine planted on the road hit a vehicle which was on a convoy of three vehicles heading to Afgoye district.

"Four military soldiers died in the blast, others were wounded. One of the vehicles in the convoy was hit by landmine which was planted by roadside. The vehicle was extensively destroyed. The injured have been rushed to hospitals in Mogadishu," Isse told Xinhua by telephone.

He said security officers arrested one of the suspects who is being interrogated over the incident, which has caused panic among public.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility in the latest attack, claiming its fighters had killed six government soldiers on board.

The Al-Qaida linked group of Al-Shabaab has carried out two other deadly attacks in Mogadishu and Baidoa towns since Friday last week, killing more than 40 others. Endit
