SGC countries vow to promote Southern Gas Corridor project

Xinhua, March 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Southern Gas Corridor(SGC) countries on Monday pledged to further their cooperation to secure reliable, consistent gas supplies from Azerbaijan to the European markets.

The joint statement was made after the seconding meeting of the SGC Advisory Council, attended by 12 ministers of SGC partner countries, including Turkey, Georgia, Greece, Albania, Italy, and Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijan-initiated SGC project envisages the delivery of the gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe. The natural gas flow will start in Azerbaijan, cross seven countries and reach European markets.

In the statement, the countries pledged to push forward with legal procedures and regulative measures domestically to pave the way for the implementation of the project.

Meanwhile, the declaration also encouraged the cash-strapped countries to seek support from national and international financial institutions to finance the project.

It also mentioned the possibility of expanding the project beyond the EU, including the Balkans.

Stretching over 3,500 km, the SGC project is comprised of three pipelines: the Trans Anatolian Pipeline, Trans Adriatic Pipeline and South Caucasus Pipeline.

The first gas supplies through the pipeline to Georgia and Turkey are set to start by late 2018. Endit
