Algeria and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) discussed nuclear energy cooperation on Monday, as the North African country hopes to run its first nuclear power plant before 2029.

Algerian Energy Minister Salah Khebri met with visiting IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano in Algiers on Monday.

Salah said the meeting assessed cooperation between Algeria and the IAEA in terms of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, as well as training trainers.

Amano hailed the "good cooperation" with Algeria, saying the IAEA is ready to assist Algeria in its peaceful purposes of nuclear activity.

The IAEE chief also met with the Algerian foreign minister on Monday, and said Algeria is a "very important partner" and relations between the two sides are excellent."

Amano's two-day visit aims to strengthen the existing collaboration between Algeria and the IAEA.

Algeria has signed nuclear cooperation agreements with Russia, the United States, China, and Argentina. It has vowed to develop nuclear energy in order to diversify its energy sources.

Algeria hopes to run its first nuclear power plant before 2029. The oil-rich nation is focused on preparing experimental reactors and investing in training employees for this goal. Endit
