Pakistan's parliament becomes first in world to "Go Green" completely

Xinhua, February 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Pakistan's parliament on Tuesday became the first legislature in the world that functions on green energy completely with a solar power production project that was donated and constructed by China.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday attended a switch-on ceremony at the parliament in capital Islamabad, which was also participated by Chairman of Pakistan Senate (the Upper House), Senator Raza Rabbani, Speaker of the National Assembly (the Lower House), Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong, ministers, parliamentarians and other officials.

On April 21, 2015, the inauguration ceremony for the project was jointly attended by Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who paid a two-day official visit to Pakistan from April 20-21 last year.

Addressing the ceremony, PM Sharif expressed thanks to the Chinese government for its support in the materialization of the Green Parliament Project and termed it a testimony of the solid friendship between the two countries, and urged the public and private sectors to follow the exemplary project.

The PM said, "Pakistan has launched a number of power projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor initiative, which will help Pakistan overcome its energy crises. Pakistan, with the Chinese cooperation, will be able to control its energy woes in 2018."

On the occasion, Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong said the Green Parliament Project is the outcome of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Pakistan, adding that China will continue to support Pakistan to overcome power shortfall.

The environment-friendly project that was completed on Dec. 7 last year has zeroed the electricity bill of the Parliament House. Endit
