Boy killed, 38 wounded in S. Philippine blast

Xinhua, February 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

A six-year-old boy was killed while 38 others were injured in a grenade explosion at a carnival in Esperanza town in south Philippine province of Sultan Kudarat on Sunday night, local authorities said on Monday.

Central Mindanao regional police spokesman Romeo Galgo named the fatality as Alton John Antonio.

Galgo said 38 others were brought to different hospitals for treatment, including Toto Villaruel who is described to be in "serious condition."

Galgo said the explosion occurred around 8:15 p.m. at the carnival near the Esperanza public market.

Galgo added the still unidentified suspects lobbed two MK2 grenades at the carnival but only one of them exploded.

The other grenade was recovered and subsequently disrupted by responding members of the Explosive and Ordnance Team.

Authorities are still conducting investigation to establish the identities of the suspects and their motive. Endit
