Sao Paulo suffer shock defeat in Copa Libertadores

Xinhua, February 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sao Paulo suffered a shock defeat in their Copa Libertadores group stage opener, losing 1-0 at home to The Strongest of Bolivia on Wednesday.

It was the first time the Paulista club have suffered a reverse on home soil against a Bolivian club in their history. To make matters worse for the Brazilians, it was The Strongest' s first away victory in the continental competition in almost 34 years.

The home side created chances but the loss of Alexandre Pato to Premier League club Chelsea cost them dear, the team lacking a killer instinct in front of goal.

In the second half, Sao Paulo coach Bauza sent on Calleri to give his side more attacking impetus, but the plan ultimately backfired.

In the 62th minute, Alonso scored the game's only goal to ensure the three points headed back to Bolivia.

The home fans made no secret of their displeasure at the final whistle, boos ringing around the Pacaembu Stadium. The main subjects of the fans' fire were midfielder Michel Bastos and forward Centurion, who failed to make the vital difference in attack.

Their task in the tournament does not get any easier. Sao Paulo now face the daunting prospect of a trip to Buenos Aires to take on River Plate.

The Argentine giants are the defending Libertadores champions. Enditem
