External borders protection question of survival for EU: Slovak PM

Xinhua, February 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Friday the protection of Europe Union's external borders is definitely becoming a question of survival for the bloc.

Speaking at an international conference called "Social Democracy in the 21st Century - Without Cuts and Closer to People," Fico said 2016 might be a make-or-break year for the EU.

While some countries were until recently welcoming refugees with open arms, they are closing doors to EU citizens now. He said that the potential closure of borders between individual EU countries would hurt Slovakia's economy seriously.

"Closed borders are measurable in terms of national economic losses for an open economy like ours," Fico said. Enditem
