Sudan condemns attacks by Darfur rebel groups against Libyan town

Xinhua, February 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sudan Thursday condemned recent attacks by rebel groups from Sudan's Darfur region against the Libyan town of Kufra, in which more than 30 people have been killed.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attacks against Kufra in southeaster Libya were carried out by the so-called Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), which would "destabilize peace and security and serve their personal interests."

The town of Kufra has witnessed violent clashes in the past three days between local forces and armed groups affiliated with Sudanese rebel factions from Darfur, resulting in the death of over 30 rebels.

Libya's local media reported the mayor of Kufra said that local fighters from Sobol Al-Salam battalion confronted the Sudanese groups in an oasis, killing 21 of them and arresting four others.

Sudan said Libyans are "well aware of the group attacking them and attempting to involve rebel armed groups to fight in Kufra."

Sudan has also denied accusations by Arko Minni Minnawi, the SLM leader, that Sudan supports the terrorist attacks in Libya, reaffirming Sudan's full support for stability and security in Libya and Khartoum's preparedness to redeploy the joint Sudanese, Chadian and Libyan forces to protect the three countries' borders.
