Trial against former Auschwitz guard starts in Germany

Xinhua, February 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

The trial against a 94-year former Auschwitz guard began on Thursday in German city of Detmold.

Reinhold Hanning, who worked at the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1940s, should be questioned in front of the court over his accessory role to murder of at least 170,000 people.

According to prosecutors, Hanning had contributed to the functioning of the murder machinery as a security guard of Auschwitz.

However, Hanning kept silent on the first day of his trial, and he only let his lawyers read information about himself.

Some German media reported that Hanning has admitted being a guard before the trial, but he denies his involvement in the mass murder.

Due to the health condition of the 94-year-old, duration of each trial day is limited to two hours.

The Nazis killed at least 1.1 million people at Auschwitz camp from 1940 to 1945, most of whom were Jews. Endit
