The general director of the Mozambican Disasters Management Institute(INGC) Mauricio Xerinda said Wednesday that 45 people have died of heavy rains that have been falling in the north of the country since October last year.

Xerinda said 26,000 people have been affected by the natural disasters in Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula, and in the central region of Zambezia.

"Of the dead, 20 were killed by thunderstorms,"he said.

The fury waters destroyed several bridges, roads, homes, planted fields, among other infrastructures. The governor of Cabo Delgado, Celmina da Silva, told the Mozambican Television in Pemba, the provincial capital on Tuesday that many neighborhoods were affected by the fury waters.

"The INGC has been assisting people affected by the heavy rains by providing them food, water, blankets, clothes, building materials to recover their homes, among other items,"Xerinda said.

The country expects more rains at the end of this month in the north and central regions.
