Nepal's former PM Koirala cremated with state honor

The final rites of Nepalese former Prime Minister and President of Nepali Congress has been performed with state honors on Wednesday.

The funeral of 78 years old Koirala, who passed away following pneumonia on wee hours of Tuesday, has been performed as per Hindu rituals at Pashupati Aryaghat in the capital.

Cousins of former PM, Atul and Sudhansu Koirala, burned the funeral pyres upon Koirala's body while Nepal Army offered a 12-cannon salute to former PM at army headquarters.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli visited Pashupati Aryaghat to offer final homage and draped Koirala's body with national flag.

Deputy Prime Ministers, ministers, speaker, former ministers, major leaders of various political parties and representatives from diplomatic missions also reached Pashupati to offer final tributes to committed democrat Koirala, who played a key role in the promulgation of new constitution.

Earlier, hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life including family and relatives, leaders, cadres and Congress members had taken part in the funeral procession that started from Dasarath Stadium. Koirala's body was kept in stadium since Tuesday noon to let public offer the final respect.

The government had provided a public holiday today to mourn the demise of Koirala, who served as country's 37th Prime Minister from Feb. 2014 to Oct. 2015. Endit
