Share of renewables in EU energy consumption up to 16 pct in 2014

Xinhua, February 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

In 2014, the share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy reached 16 percent in the European Union (EU), according to official data unveiled Wednesday.

This represents almost double that of 2004 (8.5 percent), the first year for which the data is available, the figures from Eurostat, the EU's statistical office, showed.

Among the EU member states, Sweden had by far the highest share of renewables, with 52.6 percent of energy from renewable sources in its gross final consumption of energy, Eurostat said.

It was followed by Latvia and Finland (both 38.7 percent), Austria (33.1 percent) and Denmark (29.2 percent).

Moreover, the Eurostat said in the EU, the lowest proportions of renewables were registered in Luxembourg (4.5 percent), Malta (4.7 percent), the Netherlands (5.5 percent) and Britain (7.0 percent).

The share of renewables in gross final consumption of energy is one of the headline indicators of the Europe 2020 strategy.

The target to be reached by 2020 for the EU is a share of 20 percent energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy, the Eurostat noted. Endit
