Brazil midfielder Fred given FIFA ban

Xinhua, February 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil international midfielder Fred has been banned from all football until June by the sport's world governing body FIFA.

The 22-year-old was initially only banned from matches under the jurisdiction of South American confederation CONMEBOL after a positive doping test at last year's Copa America.

The original sanction, imposed by CONMEBOL's disciplinary committee on December 14, allowed him to continue playing for his club Shakhtar Donetsk.

FIFA said Friday's ruling precluded Fred from all types of matches, "including domestic, international, friendly and official fixtures."

Fred tested positive to the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, a prohibited substance that can be used as a masking agents for others. Endit
