India officials Friday suspended three policemen including an officer in southern state of Karnataka for negligence of duty in an assault on Tanzanian woman.

The 21-year-old student was assaulted and stripped on Sunday night by mob in Bengaluru city, after a car overran a local woman.

"The policemen have been suspended for dereliction of duty and for not taking action to stop the mob from attacking the Tanzanian woman," a state government official said.

Nine people, including four last evening, have so far been arrested in the case.

Meanwhile, Tanzanian High Commissioner to India and team of India's External Affairs Ministry visit Bengaluru and met state officials regarding the case.

India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has described the incident as shameful.

Reports said a rashly driven speedy car by a student from Sudan ran over a local woman sleeping along the roadside on Sunday.

Following the accident, infuriated locals torched the car while Sudanese student managed to escape.

However, the mob subsequently attacked a Tanzanian woman and her three friends as their vehicle was passing through the accident site. The mob also set their vehicle on fire.
