Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis on Friday was transferred to the cardiac surgery unit of a hospital here after two weeks of treatment at the intensive care unit following heart surgery, the president's office said.

According to his spokespeople, Vejonis' health had improved to the degree that he no longer needed intensive therapy and can continue convalescing at the cardiac surgery unit of Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital.

The Latvian president is also gradually resuming his office duties. On Friday, he signed a decree promoting 22 military officers to higher ranks.

Vejonis underwent heart surgery at the hospital's cardiology center last month. During the surgery, the president's heart valve, which was affected by septic infection, was replaced with a prosthetic one.

On Tuesday, Vejonis released a video in which he thanked Latvia's people for their support.

Meanwhile, medics are cautiously optimistic about the patient's progress. They revealed that in addition to the health issues caused by sepsis, Vejonis also has a minor congenital heart defect. Endit
