Ukraine's flu death toll surpasses 200

The death toll in the flu outbreak in Ukraine has passed the 200 mark, official data showed Friday.

"Since the beginning of the epidemic season, we have registered 201 laboratory-confirmed lethal cases from influenza, which include three deaths of children under 17 and a death of a pregnant woman," the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The number of fatalities from the swine flu, the respiratory disease caused by a strain of the influenza of H1N1 type, has surged to 152 people, said the statement.

It said about two-thirds of those who died had appealed for medical help too late and no one of the victims had a flu shot.

The influenza epidemic, which was declared in Ukraine last month, is the largest outbreak of flu in the East European country since 2010, when the infectious disease has claimed the lives of 282 people. Endit
