Minor tremors reported close to Spanish city of Lorca

Xinhua, February 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

An area close to the city of Lorca in southwest Spain was affected by seven tremors on Friday morning.

A majority of the tremors measured less than 2 on the Richter scale. However, the same region on May 11, 2011, witnessed a 5.1 earthquake that killed nine people in Lorca, a town of 60,000 inhabitants.

This region, which is placed on the divide between the African and Eurasian plates, has been the site of a great deal of activity in recent weeks after a quake of 6.3 on the Richter scale caused minor damage and a handful of minor injuries in the Spanish North-African enclave of Melilla on Jan. 26.
