Myanmar's newly-elected Union Parliament made up of House of Representatives (Lower House) and House of Nationalities (Upper House) is due to begin its first session in Nay Pyi Taw next Monday, a week after the two houses began, parliament sources confirmed Friday.
Sessions of regional or state parliament will be held separately in 14 respective regions or states on the same day.
During the session, the Union Parliament will also set the announcement date of presidential nomination list to elect the country's president and vice presidents.
The new parliaments started their first sessions with electing the speakers and deputy speakers of the the House of Representatives and the House of Nationalities.
The first session of the new houses came nearly three months after the end of the general election on Nov. 8 last year, in which the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats.
The president will be elected by the Presidential Electoral College which is to be formed with three groups of the Union Parliament members, respectively representing the Lower House, the Upper House and the military.
Each group is to first elect a candidate from MPs or non-parliament members by voting, and among the three candidates, a president will be elected.
As winner of last year's general election, the NLD has grabbed 886 seats or 77 percent of the total 1,150 parliamentary seats at three levels of parliament, and the party will compete mainly against the former ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party. Enditem
