Visegrad group countries to help Macedonia with migrant crisis

Xinhua, February 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Police officials from the Visegrad group countries (V4) as well as experts from Slovenia and Serbia met here Thursday to deal with the current migrant crisis, local media reported.

The meeting's aim is to assess the current situation and define a legal framework to tackle the potentially escalating unrest.

Macedonian Minister Oliver Spasovski declared that it is necessary now more than ever to act together, provide aid and establish cooperation.

"We have asked for assistance from...Austria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovakia, Poland, Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia, to organize joint operations for heightened inspection on our southern border," Spasovski stated.

"Due to its geographical location, Macedonia is caught up in an unfortunate situation caused by the unstoppable flow of refugees and migrants arriving on the southern border. Over 720,000 people transited across Macedonia in 2015," he added.

The V4 countries includes the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

The V4 police officials also visited the migrant reception center in Gevgelija at Macedonia's southern border with Greece. Endi
