9 drown as migrant boat sinks off Turkey's Aegean coast

Xinhua, February 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least nine refugees, including two children, drowned on Tuesday when their boat capsized off Turkey's Aegean coast, Turkish media reported.

The boat, believed to have been on its way to a Greek island, was carrying at least 11 refugees when it sank off Izmir in western Turkey due to high waves, the private Dogan news agency reported.

The Turkish coast guards rescued two from the sea, the report said.

Over 80,000 refugees were saved off Turkish coasts in 2015 alone, while more than 3,000 died on their way to Greek islands via Turkey, the Turkish coast guards said.

On Saturday, 39 people, including children, died off Turkey's Aegean coast, when a boat carrying 114 refugees sank. Endit
