Zambian trainer rues CHAN exit

Xinhua, February 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Head coach of the Zambia national soccer team George Lwandamina said he was disappointed that the team did not reach the finals of the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Times of Zambia reported on Tuesday.

Zambia crashed out in the quarter-finals of the tournament after losing 4-5 on penalty shoot-out to Guinea after a barren draw in regular time.

"Of course one will be disappointed for not going further than the quarter-finals but the guys fought really hard and to the bitter end. We are also proud we have not conceded a goal throughout the tournament which is really commendable," he is quoted saying by the paper.

He further commended his players for their fighting spirit during the tournament in which they beat Zimbabwe and Uganda and settled for a barren drawn against Mali in the group stage.

The team, he said, will have to pick itself up and look forward to a busy year which will see Zambia compete in both the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup and Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Endit
