UN envoy's meeting with Syrian gov't delegation rescheduled: spokesperson

Xinhua, February 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

In an announcement just ahead of the scheduled time, the office of the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria on Monday said the meeting with the delegation of the Syrian government had been "rescheduled".

The office said the Special Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, is still expected to meet with the representatives of the opposition team, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), later Monday afternoon as planned.

On Monday morning, a spokesperson from HNC confirmed the opposition had decided to meet the U.N. Special Envoy de Mistura at his office at 5 p.m. local time Monday.

"We have come to Geneva to seek relief for our people by insisting UN Security Council resolution 2254 is implemented, which means humanitarian relief, the lifting of sieges, and the end of attacks on civilians," said Spokesman Salem Al-Meslet.

"We have received reassurances from our friends in the international community, and have had a positive response from UN Special Envoy de Misutra. We are intensifying our efforts to ensure that action is taken to end the suffering in Syria." He added.

Earlier on Sunday, the UN Special Envoy paid a "courtesy visit" to the delegation of HNC at their hotel in Geneva following their arrival Saturday evening, and held a "short informal meeting" with the delegation, which was described as "useful" in addressing issues relating to the Intra-Syrian talks.

While at the same time, the U.N. Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, also on Sunday afternoon paid a "courtesy" visit to the hotel of the delegation of the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic to discuss practical arrangements related to the next steps in the talks.

UN-brokered peace talks are to take place over the next six months in view of finding lasting peace for Syria, a country at war since 2011. Enditem
