Algeria says it backs Nigeria's anti-terror efforts

Xinhua, January 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

Algeria on Friday said it supports Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, following Wednesday's terrorist attacks perpetrated in the Nigerian town of Chibok by Boko Haram extremists.

"After kidnapping 219 schoolgirls in 2014, the terrorist group of Boko Haram has been targeting again Nigeria's northeast by committing bloody attacks in a market in Chibok," spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Abdelaziz Benali Cherif was quoted as saying by APS news agency.

"Algeria strongly condemns this criminal attack which could in no way undermine the determination of the government and the people of Nigeria to foil terrorist schemes in the region with the support of the sub-region's friendly countries, which are waging an implacable fight against terrorism," the official noted.

He further added: "Algeria will always be supporting Nigeria in its battle against this scourge in a bid to restore security all over its territory for the sake of its people and the peoples of the region."

Local media in Nigeria reported that multiple suicide bombings hit Chibok on Wednesday claiming the life of 15 civilians and a soldier.

Boko Haram extremist group is blamed for the attacks, according to security authorities. The group's fighters already kidnapped several schoolgirls almost two years ago in this same locality. Endit
