Iceland sees increase of foreign visitor overnight stays in Dec. 2015

Iceland saw a 44-percent increase year-on-year in the number of foreigners who stayed overnight in hotels in December 2015, official figures showed on Friday.

According to statistics issued by Statistics Iceland, the number of people who paid for accommodations in Icelandic hotels rose to 181,900 in December 2015, a 36-percent increase compared with December 2014.

Meanwhile, foreign tourists accounted for 89 percent of the people who stayed in Icelandic hotels in December 2015, up 44 percent compared with the figure in December 2014. The number of Icelandic citizens staying overnight in hotels decreased 3 percent over the same period.

Foreigners who stayed overnight in Iceland in December 2015 were mostly residents from the UK, the United States and Germany.

For the year 2015, the number of overnight stays in hotels was 2,815,900, which is an increase of around 22 percent compared with the previous year. Endit
