Myanmar's outgoing Speaker of the Union Parliament U Shwe Mann Friday urged law makers of the new parliament to inherit the good practice of the previous parliament and continue to take the responsibility for the next term.
In his final speech at the final session of the union parliament that comprises two Houses, U Shwe Mann called on the new parliament to continue to promulgate laws that conform to the change of the era and system, stressing the need to revive and reinforce parliament culture.
He said the outgoing parliament has fully carried out its duties during the past five years of its term and has done a lot with still more left undone.
He said that throughout its previous term, the union parliament was able to enact a total of 229 laws, of which 17 laws were withdrawn, 103 laws amended and 109 laws newly promulgated.
Outgoing Speaker of the House of Nationalities U Khin Aung Myint hailed the undertakings of the previous parliament, describing them as active and up to standard.
The present five-year term of the parliament, which lasted from Jan. 31, 2011, came to an end Friday and the new term of the elected parliament, dominated by the National League for Democracy (NLD), will start on next Monday.
The current term of the government will also expire on March 30 and a new government will take office on the day in accordance with the result of Nov. 8 general election in 2015.
On Thursday, the NLD nominated two elected parliament representatives to act as new speakers of the two Houses of the next term of the parliament with U Win Myint as speaker of the House of Representatives and U Mann Win Khaing Than as speaker of the House of Nationalities.
The nominated speakers are yet to be finalized in the new parliament. Enditem
