Xinhua, January 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Afghan militancy and counter-militancy have claimed 12 lives over the past two days, officials said Friday.

In the latest violent incident, two people including an armed insurgent and a security man were killed as unknown armed men opened fire on the car of security personnel in Kandahar city, the capital of the southern Kandahar province on Friday, police said.

"Unknown armed men, presumably Taliban militants opened fire on the car of security personnel Friday, triggering a gun battle during which an attacker and one security personnel were killed," provincial police spokesman Zia Durani told Xinhua.

One more attacker sustained injuries in the firefight, he added.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of Kandahar and the neighboring Helmand and Zabul provinces haven't commented.

Afghan Defense Ministry, in a statement released Friday, reported 10 people including seven armed militants and three security personnel were killed over the past 24 hours in the militancy-plagued country.

"Afghan security forces during series of operations across the conflict-ridden country have killed seven armed insurgents and injured nine others," said the statement of the Defense Ministry.

However, the Defense Ministry in the statement confirmed that three personnel of national army have also been killed over the past 24 hours.

According to the statement, the operations have covered parts of the northern Baghlan and eastern Kapisa provinces.

Meanwhile, Taliban outfit in an online statement confirmed the clash in Dand-e-Ghori district of Baghlan province, claiming the militants have repulsed government forces' attack in Pul-e-Darqad area of Dand-e-Ghori on the outskirts of provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri.

Local media reported on Friday that hundreds of civilians have been languishing in the detention centers of the Islamic State (IS) in the eastern Nangarhar province over the past six months.

According to local media reports, the elders of Shinwar district in Nangarhar province have demanded the central government to take steps for the release of people from IS captivity in the eastern Nangarhar province. Endit
