Xinhua, January 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Russian man was arrested for smuggling ivory products into China, customs in the Sino-Russia border city of Suifenhe, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, said on Friday.

Suifenhe Customs seized 39.11 kilogram(about 86.22 pounds) ivory items from the man's luggage on July 30, 2015 when he tried to enter China via the highway port in Suifenhe.

These ivory products included 287 ivory bracelets, 76 ivory cylinders, 22 ivory beads, and 26 ivory chunks to be carved into seals, worth more than 1.6 million yuan (244,270 U.S. dollars), according to the customs.

Further investigation is underway.

China has increased efforts to curb illegal wildlife trafficking. Anyone involved in the illegal ivory business can face punishment ranging from six months to life imprisonment. Endi
