Sweden on Thursday took a step towards a deal with the United States that would let the two countries swap fingerprint data to tackle crime, the Swedish government said.
A law drafted by the Swedish government would let authorities in both countries run fingerprint searches in each other's databases but also require a formal request for access to a person's name and other personal data, Sweden's interior ministry said in a press release.
"We are exchanging fingerprints with the United States to strengthen our work against serious crime," Interior Minister Anders Ygeman said in a statement.
Requests for personal data tied to the fingerprints would under the draft law be tried in each country before access is granted, the Swedish government said.
The proposed legislation is now due for review by national authorities. Endit
