Burkina Faso postpones municipal elections to May

Xinhua, January 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Municipal elections in Burkina Faso, formerly scheduled for late January after November 2015 presidential and legislative elections, will be postponed to May 22, the ministerial council announced on Thursday.

According to the ministerial council, the new date has been set following a meeting of the government, the national independent electoral commission and the political class.

On the occasion of these elections, more than 5.5 million voters are expected to cast their votes to elect mayors and municipal councilors of over 300 municipalities in the country.

According to observers, thousands of defense and security forces will be deployed to secure voting operations in the West African country that is facing unrelenting terrorist attacks.

The municipal elections are deemed crucial for the future of Burkina Faso as they will complete elections process in the country, following the resignation on October 2014 of President Blaise Compaore amid public insurrection after his 27 years' rule. Enditem
