The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will participate in a UN observer mission in Colombia to ensure the success of a peace deal.

"All the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean agreed and are ready to participate," said Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Wednesday during the a CELAC summit in Quito, Ecuador.

"This will help accelerate the end of the conflict. Today, we are taking a big step forward in search of peace."

On Jan. 19, the Colombian government and the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) jointly asked the United Nations to create an observer mission to help resolve the half-century-old conflict, as they are reaching the final stages of peace talks in Havana, Cuba.

The Colombian government has set March 23 as a deadline for a binding and final peace deal. Endi
