France offers 290 mln euros financial help to angry farmers

French Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll on Tuesday announced a new financial aid worth 290 million euros (314.33 million U.S. dollars) to the country's suffering cattle, pork farmers and poultry producers.

In a statement posted on the ministry website, Le Foll said the country would allocate 130 million euros to support duck and geese farmers who cut their production and set to report heavy losses due to bird flu.

Since November 2015, France has recorded 69 outbreaks of avian influenza in eight administrative departments in the southwest region, where foie gras makers were forced to freeze their output.

The package also offered 125 million euros to livestock farmers to contribute to ease their struggling financial situation and 35 million euros would be devoted to sheep sector, according to Le Foll.

The government has already proposed 600 million euros to the domestic livestock farmers who protested low meat prices. (1 euro = 1.083 U.S. dollars) Endit
