PNA calls on U.S. to push forward to hold int'l peace conference

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The consensus government of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Tuesday called on the United States to push forward to hold an international peace conference for solving the Middle East conflict.

The government, which held its cabinet weekly meeting in both Ramallah and Gaza via the video conference system, said in a press statement that the U.S. is demanded to practice its role of fairness and impartiality.

"After the U.S.-sponsored bilateral peace talks with Israel lasted for nine months and ended in 2014 without making any progress, the U.S. has to back an international peace conference and oblige Israel to be committed to it," it said.

The cabinet also said "amid such a situation, it has become impossible to reach a peace agreement with Israel throughout bilateral talks because of what the Israeli government is practicing on the ground, mainly denying the Palestinian rights."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had earlier stated that the PNA and France are working together on the idea of holding a conference that leads to ending the Israeli occupation and establish a Palestinian state.

"The peace conference has to end up with a mechanism on ending the Israeli occupation upon a specific time schedule in order to establish a Palestinian state on 1967 territories with East Jerusalem as its capital," said the statement.

Last peace talks between the two sides were sponsored by the United States in 2013 and lasted for nine months without achieving any progress due to deep differences on border, settlement and recognition of a Palestinian state. Endit
