Smoke suspends operations at Tokyo's Ginza subway station

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Smoke filled a busy subway station in central Tokyo on Tuesday morning during rush hour, disrupting services.

According to the subway operator, smoke was seen billowing out of a ceiling vent at the Tokyo Metro Co.'s Ginza Station on the Hibiya Line.

Police were called to the scene following the operator sounding the alert at 6:55 a.m. Part of the line has been suspended, the operator said. And passengers, at the time, were seen fleeing from the busy station while covering their mouths and noses with handkerchiefs and scarves.

The subway operator confirmed that the smoke originated for an air-conditioning machine room and spread though ventilation ducts above the platform.

Police said investigations into the cause of the smoke are continuing and confirmed that no-one had been injured by the incident. Endit
