Mainz sign Leverkusen defender Giulio Donati

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Giulio Donati joined Mainz from league rivals Bayer Leverkusen with immediate effect, both Bundesliga clubs confirmed on Monday.

Mainz bolster up their defence with the signing of Donati, who penned a contract stipulated until June 2019. However, both sides agreed to keep silence over further contract details.

"After the departure of Gonzalo Jara, we were looking for a reinforcement and found Giulio Donati. He has already proven his skills with a top team in the Bundesliga and made also appearances in the Champions League. He will enrich our squad," Mainz' general manager Christian Heidel said.

The 25-year-old right back joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2013 and made overall 59 appearances for the "Werkself".

"With Giulio we get an extremely hard working defender. His mentality will enrich our game as well as team structure," Mainz coach Martin Schmidt said.

The "Nullfuenfer" sit currently on the 8th place of the standings. They face fourth placed Monchengladbach at the opener of the 19th round in Bundesliga. Endit
