Mozambique announces new coach for national squad

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) announced Monday Abel Xavier, former Portuguese player born in Mozambique, as the new national coach.

This is the first time the former Benfica player will be coaching a football squad out of Portugal.

Xavier is the first move of the new board of FMF since Alberto Simango Junior replaced Faizal Sidat last year.

Xavier landed in Maputo last weekend and he will recommend an assistant from Portugal.

Xavier conquered the Portuguese league in 1994 with Benfica as a player.

In 2007 Xavier joined the Los Angeles Galaxy, where he played together with David Beckham and two years later he officially announced his retirement as a soccer player.

In 2013 Xavier started his coaching career in Portugal with Olhanense. Mozambique is his first experience as coach for a national football squad.

Xavier's first task is the African Cup of Nations in Accra in March.

"We thought Xavier has the ideas that would make our national squad to conquer positive results," Simango said. Endit
