Czech Republic to send military aid to Iraq and Jordan

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Czech government has decided to provide military aid to Iraq and Jordan, which will be part of the country's contribution to the fight against Islamic State, said Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka on Twitter on Monday.

Czech defence ministry proposed to send over 6,500 new and used assault rifles and more than seven millions of pieces of ammunition to Iraqi and Kurdish army, and nearly seven millions of pieces of ammunition to Jordan.

Sobotka wrote on Twitter that the Czech Republic will send military aid (machine guns, ammunition) to Iraq. This is their support for the Iraqi army and the Kurds in the fight against the so-called Islamic State.

He said he promised to help Jordan in the fight against Islamic State in 2015. Czech will fulfill the commitment by donating Jordanian army ammunition for assaults rifles and machine guns. The Iraqi army will also get assault rifles and ammunition.

The Czech Republic wants to support the Jordan's armed and security forces.

When stated the intention to donate Jordan ammunition, Czech Defence Minister Martin Stropnicky said that Jordan is a stable alliance partner and it's an island of relative peace in the Middle East. He said the country is also part of a coalition fighting against the so-called Islamic state and takes care of about two million refugees on its territory.

The Czech Republic donated to Iraq and Kurdistan millions of rounds for machine guns, assault rifles, 5000 hand grenades and 5000 RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenades in the past years. Endit
