Slovenia, Hungary seek boosting bilateral trade

Xinhua, January 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

More than 300 businessmen and officials attended on Friday a Slovenian-Hungarian business conference here to seek modes and ways for boosting further bilateral trade.

In recent years bilateral trade has doubled, but there are still many opportunities - and a lot of ambition, said Samo Hribar Milic, director of the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GZS).

He described the event, held on the margins of a meeting of the Slovenian and Hungarian governments, as the "turning over of a new leaf" in bilateral relations, the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) reported.

He appeals, however, to politicians to protect the single European market as "the erection of borders in the Schengen zone undermines the foundations of the EU and its values."

Kata Pal, director of business sectors at the Hungarian National Trading House, stressed that Hungary was treating Slovenia as a strategic partner.

Later Friday afternoon the Hungarian and Slovenian prime ministers, Viktor Orban and Miro Cerar, will address the executives, while the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce MKIK and Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GZS) are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding.

Hungary is Slovenia's sixth largest trading partner. Bilateral merchandise trade stood at 1.3 billion euros (1.4 billion U.S. dollars) in the first nine months of 2015, with Slovenia's exports at slightly over 500 million euros, according to the STA report. Enditem
