Croatia to introduce new rules for migrants: minister

Xinhua, January 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Croatia would take new rules for refugees crossing its border after Austria and Slovenia announced new border control measures, Ranko Ostojic, the caretaker interior minister said on Wednesday.

"Aside from the information requested so far, migrants will also be asked if they are seeking asylum in Germany or Austria," he said.

Croatia would do the same as Austria and Slovenia have done, he added.

Austria on Wednesday introduced restrictions in receiving refugees and migrants via Slovenia and would reduce the numbers of them entering the country, Croatian News Agency Hina reported.

Meanwhile, Slovenian Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec announced the government would decide about adopting the same measures on its border with Croatia on Thursday.

Austria would receive only refugees whose identity can be ascertained and who are intending to seek asylum in Austria or Germany, Hina reported, adding Austria would also reduce the number of asylum seekers by 2019 to 1.5 percent of its population.

So far, a total of 598,520 refugees have passed through Croatia since Sep. 2015, according to the interior ministry. Enditem
