Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

A truck collided with a bakkie outside Mokopane town in South Africa on Wednesday morning, killing 14 people including a young child and injuring three others, police said.

The victims included several Zimbabwean nationals who were travelling in the bakkie, a kind of small van, from the border to Gauteng province, police spokesperson Kagiso Mootane said, but didn't give the exact number of Zimbabweans who died in the crash.

The driver of the bakkie, who also died, lost control of his vehicle which veered in the opposite lane, police said, adding fatigue is suspected to be the cause.

The three injured passengers are being treated at a local hospital.

Last week, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters announced 1,755 people died in car accidents between Dec. 1, 2015 and Jan. 11, 2016 in South Africa.

This was a 14 percent increase in road accident-related deaths compared to the previous festive season when 1,535 people died, the minister said.

The country has more than 700,000 car crashes a year on average, according to official figures. Endit
