Maldives President Abdulla Yameen on Wednesday condemned the terror attack on a university in northwestern Pakistan which left at least 19 people dead and dozens of others injured.

"It was with deep shock and sorrow that I learnt of the attack on Bacha Khan University, causing the tragic loss of life and distress to many," Yameen said.

"The government and people of the Maldives join me in condemning this cowardly act of terror in the strongest terms, and we express our firm solidarity with Pakistan in all its efforts to maintain national peace and harmony."

Yameen said the Maldives remained strongly committed to the fight against the global menace of terrorism and would continue to work closely with Pakistan and the international community as a whole in eliminating the scourge of terrorism.

Terrorists from the Taliban group have claimed responsibility for Wednesday's terrorist attack in Pakistan where militants opened fire on students and teachers in classrooms and hostels. Endit
