Senegal's Prime Minister Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne on Tuesday said African countries should fight against "poverty and ignorance which constitute the breeding grounds for extremism, especially terrorism."

Speaking in Dakar during the opening of the sixth general assembly of the Association of Mediators from West African states, Dionne said sustainable conflict resolution mechanisms should be put in place by African countries to better respond to security demands.

"We must prioritize lasting conflict resolution mechanisms to respond to security challenges such as terrorism and extremism which constitute real threats to peace and stability," he said.

Referring to recent terrorist attacks in Ouagadougou where 30 people died and in Bamako where 21 people died, Senegalese PM said Africa should carry out a resolute war against those who threaten peace and disrupt the continent's economic development.

He appealed for "harmonization of defense and security strategies as well as rationalization of actions and information sharing.

On Monday, Benin's President Boni Yayi, while on a visit to Burkina Faso, equally appealed for a sub-regional response to terrorism which threatens Africa's stability. Endit
