Update: Communist Party of Vietnam kicks off preparatory session of 12th National Congress

The preparatory session of the 12th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) was kicked off here on Wednesday.

At the session, the delegates approved the working regulations of the congress, and elected the Presidium, the Secretariat, and the Delegate Eligibility Appraisal Board of the 12th National Party Congress.

They also adopted the working agenda and election regulations at the 12th National Party Congress, and reports on examining the eligibility of the delegates.

After the preparatory session, the delegates studied the documents provided, Vietnam's state--run news agency reported.

On Wednesday morning, ahead of the preparatory session, General Secretary of the 11th CPV Central Committee (CPVCC) Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Chairman of National Assembly Nguyen Sinh Hung, other members of the CPVCC's Politburo, Secretariat, and deputies at the 12th National Party Congress laid wreaths and paid tribute at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi.

The 13th plenary of the 11th CPVCC last December made the decision that the party's 12th national congress will be convened on Jan. 20 to Jan. 28, 2016, to produce a new Politburo and Secretariat of the CPVCC, which will pave way for the election of the country's new leadership.

According to regulation, during the nine--day event, after the congress elects the 12th CPV Central Committee (CPVCC), the CPVCC will hold a meeting to elect the Politburo, General Secretary and Central Inspection Commission of the 12th tenure.

The results of the elections will be reported to the party congress and then will be widely announced to the public, said Mai Van Chinh, deputy chairman of the CPV's Central Organizing Committee, at a press conference held Monday in Hanoi.

Le Quang Vinh, deputy head of the CPVCC Office, told local media that the elections will take place on Jan. 27. After being reported to the party congress for approval, the results of the elections will be made public on Jan. 28.

Earlier, the 14th plenary session of the 11th CPVCC, the final session of the 11th CPVCC before the 12th national party congress, was held during Jan. 10--13.

The 11th CPVCC had discussed personnel work in a "democratic and straightforward manner," and voted to adopt the nominations of several members of the 11th CPVCC for re--election in the 12th tenure as "special" cases, along with nominations of Politburo members and CPVCC Secretariat of the 11th tenure for re--election in the 12th tenure as "special" cases.

As many as 1,510 delegates representing over 4.5 million Vietnamese communist party members will attend the 12th national party congress.

During the event, participants will discuss the five--year implementation of the 11th national party congress resolution (2011--2015), review 30 years of the Doi Moi (renewal) process (1986--2016), map out directions and tasks for the national development during 2016--2020 period, among others.

The 12th National Party Congress will officially open on Thursday and is scheduled to last till Jan. 28. Endit
