Mother of Paris attacks victim takes legal action against Belgian state

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

The mother of one of the victims of the Bataclan concert hall shooting in Paris on Nov. 13 last year is taking legal action against the Belgian state, claiming it failed to act on intelligence about the attackers, French and Belgian media reported on Tuesday.

Twenty-six-year-old lawyer Valentin Ribert-Reinhart was one of 90 concertgoers killed at the venue in a series of coordinated attacks on the French capital. His fiancee was injured.

Speaking to French broadcaster BFM TV, the victim's mother Nadine Ribet-Reinhart accused Belgian authorities of "inaction".

"Everyone now knows the name of this [Brussels] municipality of Molenbeek. What did the Belgian state do before?" she said on BFM TV.

Suspected attacker Salah Abdeslam lived in the Molenbeek district with his brother Brahim, who blew himself up during the Paris attacks. Salah remains at large.

Lawyer Georges Henri-Beauthier told Belgian broadcaster RTBF he did not believe the case would succeed.

"Filing a claim for non-assistance of a person in danger is destined to fail in my opinion," he said. "She will have to prove there is a link between her loss and the Belgian state's fault."

Ten people have been charged in Belgium in connection with the Paris attacks. A Belgian of Moroccan origin was arrested in Morocco on Jan. 18, also in connection with the attacks. Endit
