Over 70 injured in metro trains crash in Italy

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

More than 70 people, mostly students, were injured on Tuesday when two metro trains crashed in Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia island region in Italy, local media reported.

The accident happened in the morning near an outlying station when one of the trains was transporting dozens of students on their way to school, according to Rai state television.

None of the injured was reported to be in a critical condition, but one of the train conductors was rushed to hospital after he remained trapped in the train plates.

According to firefighters, the two trains found themselves going in opposite directions on the same track while traveling at a speed of 30-40 km per hour with at least 150 passengers onboard.

Just one of the trains allegedly managed to slow down before the crash.

The head of local transport company ARST, Giovanni Caria, said it was not yet clear what happened, but that there was "certainly a human error."

An investigation was opened to ascertain the cause of the accident. Endit
